I’ve been listening to The Long Winters’ album, Ultimatum, a lot lately. I was too tired to go to their show a few weeks back, (work night), but Ben went, and he said it was great, and after listening to the track “The Commander Thinks Aloud” over and over, I really wish I had gone to the show…but they’ll be back. The first time I heard this song, I didn’t know what it was about and hadn’t read the lyrics, and it made me incredibly sad. When I found out what it was about (the space shuttle Columbia disintegrating as it re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere in 2003), it made perfect sense…there is something very comforting in music that is so emotionally moving that it makes you want to cry the first time you hear it. Beautiful.
We went to see Japanese experimental / metal band Boris last night at the Great American Music Hall; piece of work! (As Patton Oswalt would put it, I almost expected them to change the physical property of things with their music because they were rocking so fuckin’ hard!). It was especially entertaining to go see an entirely different genre of music for once. Two bands opened: Lair of the Minotaur and Torche. I esp. liked Torche.
The Roky Erickson documentary, “You’re Gonna Miss Me”, came from Netflix yesterday, and we watched it last night. It fully inspired me to put the anthology in its entirety on my iPod…I am especially smitten by “Anthem (I Promise)” and “For You (I’ll Do Anything)”. We’re thinking of going to see him when he comes back in Nov. since we missed last year’s show.
